A.        Subject Information

Introduction
Tourism and Hospitality Studies (THS) is an elective subject in HKDSE. This subject focuses on tourism and hospitality education with the aim to broaden students’ knowledge of the overall industry of tourism and hospitality, including its issues and trends. This subject helps students to understand tourism and hospitality by providing them with the basic concepts, knowledge and theories of the industry as well as related practical experiences.
Objectives
This subject is a cross-disciplinary subject who provides students with opportunities to explore the complex nature of the tourism and hospitality industry, as well as its intricate inter-relationship with other subjects like History, Geography and Economics. Since tourism is one of the pillars of Hong Kong economic development, we hope that students can have a better understanding of the society and be equipped to have a more holistic view on the world through the study of this subject.
Curriculum structure
The curriculum framework of THS consists of two parts: a Compulsory Part and an Elective Part.
Compulsory Part (approximately 90% of curriculum time) module suggested contents include:
  1. Introduction to Tourism and Hospitality Tourism Tourism and the Tourist (Unit One of T&T S4-5 syllabus)
  2. Destination Geography
  3. Advanced Tourism and Hospitality Tourism
  4. Customer Relations
  5. Sustainable Tourism Development
Elective Part (approximately 10% of curriculum time) module suggested contents include:
  1. Meeting, Incentive, Convention and Exhibition
  2. Local travel industry
  3. Hotel and Rooms Division
  4. Food and Beverage Division

B.        Subject Features

Activities
Experiential Learning
The THS curriculum includes a pre-employment industrial experience module, which offers students first-hand tourism experience in customer relations and various sectors of the industry, including transportation, accommodation, intermediaries, etc. Thus, students are encouraged to participate in different outings or even organize their own trips for learnig. This allows students to observe the industry’s daily operations, develop direct contact with personnel, and seek information about a possible career in the industry.

  • Local tour guide experience
F.4 students successfully designed itinerary for a tour to Central and Western District. Around 30 F.1 students and parents participated in the activity.
