Introduction
It is inescapable and unavoidable to use computers and information technology (IT) in the modern world nowadays. Students must learn to use IT as a tool for dealing with their everyday lives and equipping them for their future. Technology is developing so rapidly that the technology we deem as the-state-of-the-art today will probably be outdated, but students nowadays who have a good grounding and a solid basis in today’s technology will find it easier to cope with whatever changes and improvements on the way.
Skills and understanding of computers and IT will undoubtedly play a vital part in students’ success in the coming years when they are part of the workforce. Lack of such skills will likely be part of the reasons for fewer job opportunities and possibly failure.
Aims/Objectives
  • develop computer literacy together with an understanding of the concepts of computer systems and information technology;
  • provide an appreciation of the trends in the contemporary development of information technology;
  • demonstrate and help develop problem solving, critical thinking and communication skills and show how these apply to students’ daily lives and learning;
  • Cultivate positive attitudes towards the rapidly-changing technological basis of modern society and its widespread use of computers.
Learning objectives
  1. Computer literacy, information processing & presentation
    • Understand basic concepts related to the use of information technology and the computer.
    • Develop the capability to process and present information independently or collaboratively with peers.
    • Be aware of the validity and reliability of information, and be able to verify and evaluate the accuracy and reliability of information.
    • Be aware of intellectual property rights, data privacy issues, etc. and observe the rules and regulations in handling information.
    • Know how to apply good communication and presentation skills to influence and obtain the desired responses from the intended audience.
  2. Computer coding, skills & knowledge
    • Choose the appropriate hardware, software and computer systems to perform specific tasks
    • Develop skills to perform a variety of Internet activities
    • Apply different approaches in solving problems
    • Develop skills to solve problems systematically
    • Know how to develop simple programs to solve problems
